Does someone have a reference for the MIPS reference book by Kane? I had this info once but lost it. Does the book cover the R3000/4000/6000? Will a later edition? Please email. Dirk Grunwald -- Univ. of Colorado at Boulder (grunwald@foobar.colorado.edu)

One question, though: What's an R4000? --Joe (joeh@mips.com) -- joeh@mips.com {ames,decwrl,prls}!joeh

The book by Gerry Kane is a description of the MIPS architecture and the implementations in the R2000/R3000 (CPUs) and R2010/R3010 (FPUs). The R2000/2010 and R3000/3010 are essentially identical at the instruction level (in fact, I believe all current production R2000 chips are really R2000A chips which are just R3000 chips in an R2000 package strapped to R2000 emulation mode). The first edition was published before the R3000/R3010 were done and the choice of title was unfortunate in view of the R2000-R3000 similarity. It was titled: MIPS R2000 RISC Architecture The second (and current) edition is titled: MIPS RISC Architecture Both editions are by Gerry Kane and published by Prentice Hall the reference numbers are: 0-13-584749-4 ISBN 88-060290 Library of Congress Card Number A forthcoming edition (it is being reviewed in house even as I type) also titled "MIPS RISC Architecture" will cover the R2000/2010/3000/3010 and the next (as yet unannounced but plainly not too secret) MIPS processor. Gerry Kane has moved on to other collections of words, so the next edition will have a different author. -- Charlie Price cprice@mips.mips.com (408) 720-1700 MIPS Computer Systems / 928 Arques Ave. / Sunnyvale, CA 94086
