[comp.sys.mips] Is tar r supposed to work?

bin@primate.wisc.edu (Brain in Neutral) (02/20/90)

Hardware: M/120, with Q-120 cartridge tape

Trying to save files onto the end of a tar archive results in the following
error:

	% tar cf /dev/rmt/ctape0 file
	% tar rf /dev/rmt/ctape0 file
tar: tape backspace error: I/O error

Can this be made to work? (Yes, I know about the caveat in the tar(1) man
page(s); I'm asking if there is a workaround...)
