Memory problem resolved! About a month ago I posted a note about a very strange problem I was having when adding an additional 32MB to my 3240. In summary, the symptoms were that I had a perfectly reliable machine at 16MB (running 4.3 & ushare), but it would crash when going to 32MB or occasionally 24MB. The symptoms indicated a hardware only problem, however, it appears that it was probably some corrupted files in bootarea & master.d that caused my machine to generate faulty kernels. The most likely cause is that in the process of doing an update install of 4.3 (over 4.0) and then installing ushare, some things were duplicated or changed or some 4.0 things were not removed/replaced properly. In anycase, the system runs like a champ now and is happily providing gwm service (an X window manager) to 17 NCD X terminals as well as supporting some dial up lines. MIPs deserves some special applause for their personal attention and their willingness to see the problem though to the end. They provided a level of support above and beyond the call of duty including the loan of a machine and an on-site visit at no charge. It is very refreshing to see such strong positive coordination between hotline folks, sales staff & field engineers. Three cheers to the NJ Mips sales office, the Eastern Region Customer Support Office and the hotline folks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Andrew Simms ams@acm.princeton.edu System Administrator Program in Applied and Computational Math Princeton University Princeton, NJ 08544 609/258-5324 or 609/258-6227 609/258-1054 (fax) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Andrew Simms ams@acm.princeton.edu System Administrator Program in Applied and Computational Math Princeton University Princeton, NJ 08544 609/258-5324 or 609/258-6227
