I have a MIPS RC3240 running "RISC/os (UMIPS) 4.30.PRE-FCS" and have been having a problem with the logging of lpd errors with the syslogd. Basically, there hasn't been any logging of problems at all, even with the level set to debug. The syslog.conf file looks exactly like this: *.err;kern,mark.debug;auth.notice ?/dev/console *.err;kern,mark.debug;auth.notice /usr/adm/console_log kern.debug;daemon,auth.notice;*.err;mail.crit /usr/adm/messages lpr.debug /usr/adm/lpd-errs mail.debug /usr/spool/mqueue/syslog *.alert;kern.err;daemon.err operator *.alert root *.emerg * I turned on mail debugging, and that works fine. However, there have never been any messages written to /usr/adm/lpd-errs, While the lpd daemon was missing (!!not started by default in /etc/rc2.d/S37netdaemons !!!) this is understandable, but that has been fixed and the machine rebooted since then. Can anyone suggest a workaround? The MIPS is sending its files to Vaxstation 3100 running MultiNet, and the files almost always (> 95% of the time) disappear, as in never printed. The printcap entry is: postscript|ps|ln03r|George Fox Lab LN03R Scriptwriter, postcript queue:\ :lp=:rm=tom.imb:rp=postscript:sd=/usr/spool/ps:lf=/usr/adm/gfln03r.log:\ :sb:sh: laser|lp|ln03r-laser|George Fox Lab LN03R Scriptwriter, ascii/80col queue:\ :lp=:rm=tom.imb:rp=laser:sd=/usr/spool/laser:lf=/usr/adm/laser.log:\ :sb:sh: None of the /usr/adm/*.log files, including lpd-errs, ever have anything in them. I would like to have some kind of proof that the files are leaving the machine. [The sendmail entry in the syslog.conf was for similar reasons.] It's possible that MultiNet is dropping the print requests, but they work fine from a Sun-3/80 with an identical printcap. BTW, I am using the revised /bsd43/bin/lpd that *doesn't* hang. That problem was fixed back in January or so. "What lpd" says: what /bsd43/bin/lpd: Right, it says nothing. The old one says: RISCOS 4.30 Any help would be greatly appreciated. dan --- dr. dan davison/dept. of biochemical and biophysical sciences/univ. of Houston/4800 Calhoun/Houston,TX 77054-5500/davison@uh.edu/DAVISON@UHOU Disclaimer: As always, I speak only for myself, and, usually, only to myself.
