[comp.sys.mips] mips 4.51

mookken@cbnews.att.com (Thomas J. Mookken) (09/28/90)

When is the 4.51 version of the OS coming out? I did
get a letter from mips stating that I would receive it in september.
Does anyone know if it is delayed? I passed up on 4.50
and decided to wait for 4.51. If it is delayed I would
like to go ahead and get 4.50 and upgrade to 4.51 later.

Shipments start after the weekend and will continue for about four weeks;
it is already shipping on new systems. I just took a second off from
writing the READ THIS FIRST document ("Software Update Bulletin") to write
this note.

I would strongly recommend waiting for 4.51. My experience with 4.50 on
an M/120 has been terrible. After installing 4.50 I spent the next two
weeks getting to know the MIPS customer support people REAL well.
Eventually, we got workarounds for the most serious problems, but it's
been pretty ugly.

I should point out that overall, I've been impressed with Mips customer
support. The fact that I did get workarounds in a reasonably timely
manner speaks for their ability to track down and resolve non-trivial
problems. It's not their fault the release wasn't as solid as it should
have been.
