[comp.sys.mips] RISCos 4.51 bug report and "fix"

svpillay@pusun3.Princeton.EDU (Kanthan Pillay) (11/09/90)

I recently upgraded our RC3240 to RISCos 4.51, which I had eagerly
awaited since our last version of the OS did not offer support for
Yellow Pages. So I booted it up and fired up ypbind pointing it at our
YP server and telneted in to the machine with a YP login and that worked
fine. So I tried to login to the console and could not get a login
prompt. In fact, none of our hardwired terminals or telebit dial in
lines were working. On inspection, the getty processes for all those
lines were respawning every 20 seconds or so.

I eventually traced the problem to my having turned on YP by creating
/etc/vis.conf. Removing the file fixed the gettys, but that left me
without YP. I eventually traced the problem to the "group" entry in
/etc/vis.conf. By removing the line which said:

	group: files nis

the gettys started working again.

This is an irritating problem. I'm surprised that something like this
was not detected. The folks at the MIPS hotline were no help at all.
("Sir, we see you have a contract for software updates but not software
support." No shit, Sherlock...)

Second problem: We use the RC3240 as a server for a bunch of X
terminals. So I set up the xdm config files and fire up xdm, then try
logging in at an X terminal. No dice. xdm does not recognize yp logins.
Come on, guys. Is it that hard to stick in a -lsun when you're
compiling?

Another problem: many commands have problems interpreting yp logins. For
example, if I fire up an xterm, "who" gives output like this:

	rupert ttyq0 Nov 7 09:25
	buttke tty3 Nov 8 09:51
	?????? ttyq2 Nov 7 14:47
	svpillay ttyq3 Nov 8 20:35

While "wall" gives something like this:

	Broadcast Message from ????????@euterp (ttyq4) at 21:54 ...

This is probably the fault of xterm, since it probably doesn't speak YP.
Come on, MIPS. You guys are distributing this stuff as RISCwindows.
Can't you at least make sure that it works correctly with RISCos ?

Anyway, so much for the flames. Here's a question. Anyone out there try
compiling the MIT X11R4 distribution under RISCos 4.51? If so, could you
let me have a copy of your config/mips.cf file plus any hints for
getting it up and running? Any help will be appreciated.

You can work around this by creating the group 'tty' in /etc/group and making
sure that 'files' precedes 'nis' in the vis.conf entry for groups.
