[comp.sys.mips] MX records and sendmail problem

I am having a problem with MX records and sendmail.  mother.bates.edu
is a MIPS 120-5 running 4.51, and has MX records for the other hosts
on campus that look something like the following:
 
	ladd.bates.edu.	3600	MX	20 ladd.bates.edu.
	ladd.bates.edu.	3600	MX	10 mother.bates.edu.
 
Now whenever mother receives mail for ladd, I see the following error in
/usr/spool/mqueue/syslog:
 
	Dec 28 15:36:42 mother sendmail[2095]: AA02095:
		message-id=<9012282036.AA02095@mother.bates.edu>
 
	Dec 28 15:36:42 mother sendmail[2095]: AA02095: from=rob, size=32,
		class=0, received from local
 
	Dec 28 15:36:42 mother sendmail[2098]: AA02095: to=rspell@ladd,
		delay=00:00:01, stat=Local configuration error
                                     ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
 
and the sender gets their mail message returned with the same error
message.
 
If I remove the MX record:
 
	ladd.bates.edu.	3600	MX	20 ladd.bates.edu.
 
leaving:
 
	ladd.bates.edu.	3600	MX	10 mother.bates.edu.
 
I can send mail to ladd again.
 
This used to work before I upgraded to 4.51.
