I'm trying to put a Maxtor LXT213 in a 2030. The 2030 is complaining that the drive has no volume header. I am trying to put a volume header on with format program. I've booted format (version is dated Jun 6 1990 and is about 160k in size). It asks all kinds of neat questions. I answer them. Everything looks cool. (Im using RISCOS 4.51, although format may be from a previous release (4.50?). I am uncertain what the correct answers are for some of the questions, (ie. enable sector slipping, enable sector forwarding, max defect lenght in bits, etc.) After I've answered all the questions, format attempts to read the manufacturers defect list. Format is unable to read this list, on the first track so it goes into a loop trying to find the defect list on each of the 7 heads on each of the 1320 cylinders. I did not wait for it to complete this pass. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what to do? I'll attach below the answers I gave to the format questions. I couldn't get a manual on the disk from our supplier, so some of my answers are guesses. -Larry Format's questions spiral skew: 0 # words in gap1: 0 # words in gap2: 0 # cylinders: 1320 Volume 0 starting head: 0 Volume 0 # heads: 7 Volume 1 starting head: 0 Volume 1 # heads: 0 # sectors/track 55 # bytes/sector 512 Sector interleave 0 # retries on error 5 milliseconds per word: 0 enable sector slipping: off enable sector forwarding: off enable track forwarding: off multi volumes: off transfer regardless of errors: off enable recalibration at last resort: off total bytes per track: 24576 max defect length in bits: 0 max # defect tracks: 0 max # defects 0
