I would like to know if MIPS has any plans to change their malloc/free algorithms from the powers of 2 bucket approach. As X servers grow more complex, we are finding that malloc'ing only in powers of 2 can often result in wasting lots of memory. Would somebody who knows more about this, at Mips, please send me a blurb about any possible future changes to the memory allocation routines. The amount of paging/swapping can dramatically slow down a Mips based machine and as GUI's grow more complex, the problem will only get worse.
