[news.newusers.questions] Help on Local USENET feed

kreme@netcom.UUCP (Kreme The Immortal) (07/29/89)

I looked at the latest listing on pubnet.nixpub and found nary a one
public access UNIX site in the 303 area code. I knew this going in, but
I wanted to quintuple check. Nope, not a one.

Now what? I want to have a USENET feed. What kind of Hardware do I need,
and how difficult would it be for me to set up a public access Unix machine
(actually Xenix I 'spose) If I were to get a 286 or 386 machine? How
much of a Wizard do I need to be? (I'm not much of one, so I better find
one quick, huh?)

My trouble is I hate having to go through PCP to get to Netcom. I like
Netcom and it offers what I want (sh, csh, ksh and full USENET).

Would I have to set up an independant UUCP site, or could I arrange
somethign with Colorado.EDU? How much hard drive spave do you need to
run a system like this? 200 Megs? more? Less?

Is Xenix expensive? how about UUCP software? How about things like
elm, emacs, etc? How much of a total investment are we talking here?

How about the pro-carolina type systems? What are they exactly?

How about any glaring questions I forgot to ask?

E-mail is fine, if you like. Posting is better.
