[news.newusers.questions] sources, ftp, and mail

markd@adelphi.UUCP (Mark J. DeFilippis ) (08/29/89)

I am sure this must have been asked 10000+ times, but I have not seen
it recently and I have been looking for a while.

1. What exactly is ftp and how can I get this usenet news site "up
and running"? We archive net sources here at Adelphi
University, and maybe I can make them available via anonymous
uucp and/or ftp if I can get information on ftp.

2. I notice several requests from people asking for someone to
"mail me the sources for xyz". I would like to help, but
don't know exactly how to mail them, and I don't want to
get anyone angry. Do I just mail the source code via email?
Is this type of bandwidth usage frowned upon?

3. I have not seen any of the above in any of the news documentation
that came with out Netnews distribution, I looked.
Can someone out there helpd me out?

thanks
Mark DeFilippis

You can package up sources into one or more mail files (keep them
under 50k) and send by mail. If you don't do this too often you will
probably not offend anyone (some people are easily offended, however).
