[news.newusers.questions] sources and mail

Bill Davidsen gives some advice about sending files by mail
(keeping them under 50K).

Sending sources by mail is principle okay (assuming the usual
copyrights, format like shar, etc.) The reality isn't easily characterized.
This is dependent upon where you are and all the mail systems
in between source and destination. UUCP is sent out with a default
100K message size limit. This does not mean you can send this.
For the longest time the host ames (when it was a PDP-11/70) had
a 30K message limit (you can do this when you have source 8).
Additionally I've mailed 2 MBs of files
to Australia (this cost the Australian host 800 real Australian dollars).
I've also sent the same 2 MBs on the MILnet in a single mail
message. It really depends on how much faith you have in the mail system (s).
I certainly would not stake my life on it. Networks aren't described
as a reliable form of communication in Tanenbaum.

Another gross generalization from

"You trust the `reply' command with all those different mailers out there?"
"If my mail does not reach you, please accept my apology."
