[news.newusers.questions] A couple of probably commonly asked questions

beall@nunki.usc.edu (Judith Beall) (09/27/89)

I just had a couple of questions here. First of all, how can I post to a
group without replying to another post? All I can figure out how to do is
an "r" <or "R">. Also, if I "unsubscribed" to a newsgroup <Several, actually>,
how can I "resubscribe" to them if I changed my mind?

Email replies would be appreciated!

Packaged with your newsreader is a newsposter, such as postnews. It does the
"normal" postings, and is typically run from the shell-prompt level (i.e. not
under the newsreader itself).

Yes. A typical user interface (e.g. in 'rn') is to "g <groupname>", which will
ask you if you want to resubscribe. Of source, you can also edit the .newsrc
where is it pretty obvious what character determines the difference between
sunscribed and unsubscribed groups (viz. ':' vs '!').

For rn:

You can "followup" to an empty message by joining a group with no unreads
(say 'g <newsgroup>'), say 'y' when it asks if you want to join the group
with 0 unreads, and do 'f' for followup. You'll get into your editor
as though you were doing a followup to a message, but with no references.
Try it in a local newsgroup to avoid public embarrassment.

For re-subscribing to newsgroups you've unsubscribed from, I think 'g
<newsgroup>' does the trick. You can also edit .newsrc directly, I suppose,
and get rid of the '!' on the line with the newsgroup in question.
(Don't have hard evidence that either of these work.)
