[news.newusers.questions] What is clari.* ?

tp@mccall.uucp (Terry Poot) (10/12/89)

I've been off the net for a while, so this is a "new user" question. What are
the clari.* groups? We don't get them in this neck of the woods, but I see
from the news stats that they are quite sizeable.

These groups are the result of a commercial venture: ClariNet. These
are *not* part of Usenet. Instead, there is a separate net, which
happens to use the same software that Usenet uses. It is also the
case that many sites are both Usenet and ClariNet sites. (Surprised?)

You might be seeing the statistics for these groups because the sites
that carry both nets don't distinguish between them when reporting
Usenet stats.

What is ClariNet? Mostly a news service. I'd subscribe, except that
I'm almost always several weeks behind reading the various magazines
I get. Not to mention six feet of books I haven't read.

How to subscribe? Don't ask me. I've lost that information.

For information try sending mail to brad@looking.on.ca (that's in Canada,
so don't forget to include extra for postage :-) ).

ClariNet redistributes (under license) a UPI wire feed, and information
from NewsBytes (a computer industry news service).

I have no connection with ClariNet except as a happy customer.
