[news.newusers.questions] What is alt.slack?

clark@uicsl.csl.uiuc.edu (10/31/89)

As a "new user" (~1.5 years), I came across a very wierd newsgroup:
alt.slack. Postings seem to be about a quasi-religious/satirical/illuminati
group called "the cult of the subgenius". Anybody know anything about
this bizarre notesfile? Is it a joke?

Is it a joke? Yes. Is it a religion? Yes. Is it an illuminati group? Yes.

It is all of these things.

They don't exactly worship ignorance, but they do encourage deliberate
self-delusion. They figure there's no way to really make sure you haven't
duped by someone about life, the universe, and everything, so they'd
rather dupe themselves about things so they at least know where the lies
come from. :-)

Somewhat arbitrarily, they idolize a meta-being called '"Bob"' (inner quotes
are part of the name). He's the quintessential 50's media-perfect Dad.

"Slack" is the name they give the mind-state of total surrender to the
self-inflicted fantasy world.

If you want to know more about it, there is a large-format trade paperback
in most "alternative" bookstores (and some "normal" bookstores) called
"The Book of the SubGenius." It's their Bible.

Wacky but true. I read the group for a while but realized their postings
weren't as funny as the book, most of the time.
