Could someone please tell me exactly what uunet is? I mean, I send mail through it all the time, and I've heard people talk about ordering files from it, and whatnot... I'm a little bit confused, could someone help me out a little bit? Thanks. -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ John C. Simple. uunet is the core of the usenet and all these newsgroups. The machine is hardly ever down. If you want a feed for news at your site that is 100% reliable, uunet is the place. HOWEVER, to connect to uunet, you have to pay a per-minute fee. (uunet has toll-free 800 lines). -- {ames att sun}!pacbell! \ <-> America OnLine: Mark Holtz ucdavis!csusac! -> sactoh0!mholtz <=> GEnie: M.HOLTZ uunet!mmsac! / <-> Home Phone: (916) 722-8522

Taken from the Internet Resource Guide (which is copyright 1989 BBN Systems and Technologies Corporation--the following should fall under fair use): UUNET Communications Services [...] UUNET is a non-profit organization whose charter is to pro- vide electronic mail connectivity among its subscribing sites. UUNET provides fast, reliable, mail service both domestically and internationally. UUNET charges connect fees on a cost recovery basis. UUNET acts as an internet mail relay for its 1,000 subscrib- ing sites. UUNET provides a proxy ftp service and archive service which allows non-internet sites to obtain files that are available by anonymous ftp. Currently, UUNET may only be accessed via TCP/IP or the UNIX UUCP protocols. UUNET IS NOT A GENERAL UUCP/INTERNET GATEWAY (despite common delusions). [...] Access is restricted to UUNET subscribers and their correspondants. While third party access is not currently blocked, it is discouraged and software to prevent it will be installed in the future. [end excerpt] John> Thanks. You're welcome. [I *think* that should answer everyone's questions about UUNET...hopefully.] [DISCLAIMERS: I do not and have never had any association with UUNET and/or BBN. I am not Boston University's spokesbeing. Mileage may vary.] -- Christopher Davis, BU SMG '90 <ckd@bu-pub.bu.edu> <smghy6c@buacca.bitnet> "Technology is dominated by those who manage what they do not understand."
