I am having problems getting email to internet addresses from our uunet
machine. Specifically, I have been trying to contact various mailing list
moderators as listed in Gene Spaffords compilation of mailing lists which was
posted on 7 Nov 89. Every attempt at addressing the internet is returned as
"host unknown", yet the manual pages for our mail program states that the
mail program will accept addresses of the Internet format. I have tried
originating the mail from the main unix shell prompt, and also from within the
mail program. (Previously I had had problems with uunet mail which was
originated from the shell prompt, but later found out that a \ was required
before each ! only when originating from the shell prompt.) Obviously I am
a unix novice, so be mellow with those flames. ;-) To make the situation even more confusing, I have previously been successful in sending myself email
between work and compuserve, which makes use of the internet hop. However, a
repeated test of the compuserve link after I ran into the mailing list bounces
caused the compuserve mail to bounce as well.
Is there some trick to getting the mailers/routers to accept internet addresses?
Is there any way to "convert" internet addresses to uunet addresses?
Can anyone recommend books in general which will help me understand email
addressing scemes? Or specific sources on understanding unix mailers?
Thanks for any advice.
