[news.newusers.questions] Can I automatically get copies of my own postings?

toto@tank.uchicago.edu (Sandra Jessica Smyth) (12/29/89)

We are running rn here and I am posting this with postnews. Is there
anything I can do to automatically save copies of my own postings?
I.e., when I "send" this using postnews or when I followup to a
posting using rn, is there any way that a copy of it can be
automatically appended to a file something like
"Sandra's_Silly_Thoughts?"

Sure. Put this in your .login or .cshrc:

setenv AUTHORCOPY /users/toto/Sandras_Silly_Thoughts

(BTW, you don't want a filename with a single quote in it [Sandra's];
if you try to create such a file, you'll get an error message.)

Some people prefer to add a Cc: or Bcc: line to the header, and have
a copy of their article mailed to them rather than appended to one long
file. That way they can file it according to subject or such.

Yes.

It already has been automatically appended to $HOME/.article
So to view it once you've sent it, do a:
cat .article (assuming your in your $HOME directory)
However, next time you post news, this will be replaced, so if you really
want to keep it, you'd better make a copy.

I don't know about postnews.

We are using Pnews here to post articles. Pnews checks, if the
environment variable AUTHORCOPY is set. If so, it appends the message
in mailbox format to the name file.

Assuming you regularly read the newsgroup, you can put a line in the
rn KILL file to do this, something like:

   /To: me@mybox/h:s ../hold/I_posted
