Thanks to all who sent information to help me get Macsyma going. Macsyma and a number of other programs were produced by Franz Liszt under Eunice under version 3.x of VMS. The image was created by Franz, not the VMS linker. The image header had a zero in a certain byte which should have been a 1 (image header block count). VMS never checked this but now it does. The patch is as follows: $ Patch/absolute svaxima.exe PATCH Version 4-00 15-Sep-1984 IMAGE FILE BEING PATCHED: "USER$:[EUNICE.USR.MACSYMA]SVAXIMA.EXE;1" JOURNAL FILE: "USER$:[EUNICE.USR.MACSYMA]SVAXIMA.JNL;1" DATE/TIME OF PATCH: 20-SEP-1985 10:58:31.43 Some or all global symbols not accessible Image does not contain local symbols PATCH>ex/byte 10 00000010: 00 PATCH>replace/byte LOC> 10 OLD> 00 OLD> exit NEW> 01 NEW> exit old: 00000010: 00 new: 00000010: 01 PATCH>update Updating image file USER$:[EUNICE.USR.MACSYMA]SVAXIMA.EXE;2 PATCH>exit ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks again all.
