Although 4.2 did change a few things, I don't think you need to worry about
most of your applications not working. I haven't seen any problems except
for the few that have been discussed on the net, that have simple fixes
(such as reprotecting certain files). Gosling's EMACS (at least what UNIPRESS
sells) works fine, even a very old version that some people still like to use.

DEC did replace DRDRIVER in 4.2, so the SI stuff will not work right off.
I HAVE NOT TRIED THIS, but SI told me to save the 4.1 DRDRIVER with the
SI patches that has been running all along, do the 4.2 upgrade, then copy
the saved DRDRIVER back to SYS$SYSTEM and use the 4.1 driver until SI
comes up with patches for 4.2. I will repeat that I personally do not know
if this works, but that's what they told me to do. I will try it soon.
Of course if you have an Eagle as your system disk, you have a problem...

Previous minor releases of VMS have changed DRDRIVER too, and the difficulty
with SI's stuff is a reflection not of DEC making things difficult, but of
SI not writing their own driver and saving us all the same hassle everytime
VMS upgrades arrive.
