[news.newusers.questions] Signature file

sgs@blake.acs.washington.edu (Steven Smith) (07/28/89)

I'm having trouble getting my .signature file to work on public postings.
I've got a file called .signature, spelled out in entirety, of course, in
my root directory. When I reply privately (email) to postings, rn "asks me"
if I want to append the signature. If I answer yes, it's appended, no problem.
But when I post publicly (I get the message that the signature has been left
off because it must be readable by the "inews owner." The protection ("mode")
of the .signature file and my root directory are both set so that the world
can read them. What's going on? Has anyone seen this problem before?

Perhaps it is because your news program is well-behaved and only allows you
to have a signature with four lines, unlike the other news programs out there
with let you have a signature with more than four lines.

Of course, you can always read in your .signature file (or whatever) into your
editor and work around that, but the convenience (Well! Isn't that just
conveeeeeeeeeeeeeenient! --Church Lady) is nice.

The only guess I have is that the path from the root to your home
directory is protected somehow. Assuming you are on a Unix system, do
an `ls -ld' of each prefix of your path and make sure that each
component of the path has *execute* permission. That's right,
execute. Read permission doesn't allow looking up file names, execute
does. The file itself has to have *read* permission. For other OS's,
I don't know.

It is possible, that in enviroments that are made up of several
computers tied together with some kind of network, e.g. ethernet, or
with shared disk drives, that news is sent from only one system, even
though you can run the news program on any system.

If this is the case, your .signature file must be in your home
directory on the system which actually runs 'pnews' or whatever your
news posting program is.

Hope this helps more than confuses.

Thanks to all, I now have the problem under control. My .signature file is
now being appended. I trust this state of affairs will continue, although
Murphy's law says that this time it won't work. Let us hope Murphy's law
is as susceptible to itself as everything else.

I am a new user.I would like to know what a .signature file is- What
does it contain and what does it do?
( I have unix at my place and I use rn to read news )
I request someone to mail a copy of a typical .signature file.

Thanx in advance,

Hari,

When I use postnews, the program automatically appends my signature file.
When I mail a response, however, the program always asks me if I want to
append my signature file.

Since the answer is always 'yes', how can I doctor my RNINIT statement (or
other) so that I don't have to answer this question any more?
