Do *not* post to wizards unless you *are* a wizard!! : : C'mon Bill, you've been reading this net for long enough to know that! Yes. I've read the net for a while. About two years now. And I read comp.unix.wizards. But I know no such thing. : (And it's also in the Frequently Asked Questions posting in c.u.q.) (No it isn't. Check again. It says that that is a "good rule of thumb".) The question under discussion is not a trivial one and it is certainly not one that merely reading the manuals would give you the answer to. Let's put it this way: both of the posted answers I've seen are wrong. Neither deals correctly with rm's options. And neither deals properly with duplicate file names. The problem is not a simple one. Not a *hard* one, but one that is worthy of a little discussion. Accordingly, it would not be out of place on comp.unix.wizards. --- Bill { uunet | novavax | ankh } !twwells!bill bill@twwells.com

Not a *hard* one, but one that is worthy of a little discussion. Accordingly, it would not be out of place on comp.unix.wizards. Yes, it would be out of place on comp.unix.wizards. The wizards are sick and tired of it. The wizard wannabes are sick and tired of it. The wizard willneverbes (but they read the group anyway) are too clueless to to be sick and tired of it except for those who have been around for at least six months or more. The recent discussions on comp.unix.wizards are far better than is often found there, even with the occasionaly bickering that naturally comes up when the Old Guard is confronted with what they perceive to be assualts on the purity of UNIX. Please, in some groups it is especially more important that you wait for a long while to get the feel of the group and what is and isn't appropriate for it. Comp.unix.wizards is one of those groups. There's been lots of flaming about whether it's appropriate to post stuff to comp.unix.wizards if you aren't one (or if you are one, and you're having a bad day :-).) Calm down, guys!! Comp.unix.wizards got split up a long time ago into comp.unix.wizards and comp.unix.questions; there are questions that aren't wizard-level questions; usually you know whether it is or not. No question is too dumb to ask in comp.unix.questions, though you should expect an occasional RTFM or "consult your local admin" answer. Hopefully they'll tell you which manual to look in. Unfortunately, sometimes you ARE the local admin, and you HAVE read all the manuals you can find. I'm more of a guru than a wizard in this business, since I don't do real development on a frequent basis, and there are some aspects of this game where I'm still a novice, if a vocal one. Sometimes I have questions that seem hard enough to ask about in .wizards, but sometimes I'll ask in .questions, and sometimes even in this newsgroup if I know I ought to know the answer but just can't figure it out. -- # Bill Stewart AT&T Bell Labs 4M312 Holmdel NJ 201-949-0705 erebus.att.com!wcs # ho95c has gone the way of all VAX/785s, so I'm now on erebus.att.com "Careful with that VAX, Eugene!"
