What are bit.listserv groups for? They seem to duplicate other groups? Also, I've used /pattern/ to search for my username in headers, and I find that when I check the articles that are found, they have nothing to do with me, and my username is mowhere to be found? What am I doing wrong?

LISTSERV is how BITNET sites handle large mailing lists. bit.listserv is a translation into usenet semantics to take advantage of netnews' propagation efficiency and storage economy. I don't expect non-NNTP sites to carry bit.listserv, it's huge. -=EPS=-
