(What does this have to do with news.newusers.questions? This newsgroup is specifically for questions about the Usenet and about accessing NetNews. Not for questions of any sort.) There are plenty of programs useful for viewing GIF images in the comp.sources.x source archives. One archive site for comp.sources.x is uunet.uu.net, which is accessible via anonymous ftp. Check the comp.sources.x directory. Of course, this assumes that you are using an X display on your Unix host. Since you've said absolutely nothing about what kind of terminal or display you are using, I've no way to know if that assumption is valid, but it's all I've got to work with. If you are using X, you can also get several programs for manipulating images from the /contrib anonymous ftp directory on export.lcs.mit.edu. The "xv" and "pbmplus" packages are especially useful. As for ftp sites that have gif images, try logging into "quiche.cs.mcgill.ca" as "archie" and typing "prog gif" and see what you get back. Since your question is about graphics utilities under Unix, I have cross-posted this message to comp.unix.misc and alt.graphics.pixutils, and directed followups to alt.graphics.pixutils. -- Jonathan Kamens USnail: MIT Project Athena 11 Ashford Terrace jik@Athena.MIT.EDU Allston, MA 02134 Office: 617-253-8085 Home: 617-782-0710
