[gnu.misc.discuss] why I prefer newsgroups to mailing lists

bob@monster.cis.ohio-state.edu (Bob Sutterfield) (07/31/89)

I set up gnu.misc.discuss, gnu-misc-discuss@tut.cis.ohio-state.edu,
and their gateway on Tuesday afternoon. As is my custom with any new
list or gateway I configure, I added myself to the mailing list so I
might catch any bounces or loops or whatever. Then, on Tuesday
evening, I left town for the rest of the week, headed for a
non-computer conference at a non-net-connected college near Chicago.

I returned to 63 articles in both the newsgroup and my personal
mailbox (besides the other usual pile of mail), several list
bounce-o-grams regarding unreachable hosts and the like, and three
list addition requests that had been waiting for several days.

Erf... now I know why I prefer news to mailing lists :-(
