[news.software.anu-news] Is this a bug in the UPDATE command?

SLOANE@kuhub.cc.ukans.edu (Bob Sloane) (07/11/89)

Whenever I use the UPDATE command, it changes the DIRECTORY status from
REGISTER to ALL. Is this the intended behavior, or is this a bug? Has anyone
else noticed this?

I've noticed this too, since 5.7, but never said anything about it. :-)

It is semi-deliberate (whatever that means)

The actions of the UPDATE command are to free off the entire memory array
and re-map memory from the file. In doing so the displayed attribute of
each newsgroup is lost.

I'll see what can be done with this cause it is logically a bug.

While I'm writing to the list, there is some more information about versions of
NEWS: NEWS V5.8B will NOT be coming out. I have been working on including
personal MAIL into news (after all mail folders and newsgroups are pretty
similar).

V5.9 will be released in a few weeks which will include the commands

  OPEN/MAIL and CLOSE/MAIL

which will allow NEWS to be used as a mail user agent (with a set of additional
commands to manage your mail file).
