[news.software.anu-news] Setting up NEWS newsgroups for timid users

sdroppers%PBS.uucp@uunet.uu.net (Seton R. Droppers) (08/15/89)

I have a number of individuals that see all of the newsgroups that they might
register for and get very scared, to the point they question if news should
remain on the system. We are currently running V5.7 of news (I haven't gotten
around to looking for a later version yet...) and find that no matter how the
profile is set the newsgroup listing is a "DIR/ALL", not a "DIR/REGISTERED".

1) Is this DIR/REGISTER problem a known bug? If so is it fixed in the later
releases (5.8, 5.9)?

2) A possible workaround I have thought of is to create all newsgroups (local
and network) as /RESTRICT=MEMBERS newsgroups and building membership lists for
them (O what a joy...). Is this a viable workaround or am I going to be
causing more problems than I have solved?
