Hi everyone! I know that some of this has been discussed previously in this newsgroup, but maybe someone would be good enough to give me some information. We're running version 5.7 with VMS 5.0-2 and it has recently become an issue to make "private" newsgroups to replace a local conferencing system we are currently using. Now, I've explored the SET NEWSGROUP/RESTRICT=MEMBERS and SET ACCESS commands, but I have a few questions: * The documentation claims that using the SET NEWSGROUP command with ADD/DELETE/... MEMBER is "recommended" instead of using ACLs (SET ACCESS), but is there anyway to make an entire UIC group a member without using ACLs? Also, how can one see who are members of a given newsgroup?? SHOW MEMBER requires that a username is given, so do you just have to type the ACCESS.NEWS file for that information, or is there a way to see it from inside news? * Also, is there any code in the later versions to prohibit unregistered users from reading these newsgroups? Or even knowing of their existence. (This includes over the network, as we have several sites which access news remotely.) Is anybody else using restricted newsgroups? Is there interest in not letting non-members have (read) access to these groups? I'm willing to find the latest version of news (5.9?) and write the code to deal with these issues, because we need them here, but I don't want to re-invent the wheel if somebody else has done this already. ;-) Also, it would be nice to hear if other people have ideas about this and could use it. It's been suggested that I add a bitmask to the newgroup information file for each newsgroup, which specifies if the group is restricted and whether it's by username or UIC. Any suggestions/ideas would be most welcome! Send them to me via e-mail and I'll summarize for the group if there's enough interest. Thanks a lot! Michelle p.s. I'm fairly certain that there was discussion of restricted groups not too long ago, but I can't find any references. If anybody can point me at them (or tell me if they're relevant), I'd really appreciate it! ;-) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Michelle R. Sorry if anybody's seen this already, but I don't seem to be getting any response and it would appear that it's not getting out. ;-) Thanks. -- Michelle ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi everyone!
