[news.software.anu-news] add file for VMSmail extracted files broken?

sdroppers%PBS.uucp@uunet.uu.net (Seton R. Droppers) (09/07/89)

I have noticed that when I attempt to add a group of mail messages that have
been extracted from VMS mail that the ADD FILE function of news does not
recognize the the VMS mail headers for the first message that has been extracted
into the file. The sender is marked as "unknown" and the subject is marked as
"<NONE>". We are running news 5.8A. Is this a know problem and are there any
workarounds?

This is very odd. I receive my main feed via mail, and am having no problem
with it. I just use the MAIL EXTRACT command and then the NEWS ADD FILE
command and everything works fine. Could you send me a sample mail file that
demonstrates the problem, and the DCL that you use to process the mail?

  I can confirm this problem however ! Further more you can see
that for the first item extracted the real sender and subject lines appear
as normal text within the article when it is brought into NEWS.

I don't doubt that you are having a problem with this. As I said in my
previous posting on this topic, please send me something to duplicate the
problem, because I can't duplicate it here, and I use this feature of news for
my regular feed about 20 times a day, 7 days a week. It is very difficult to
debug something that you can't reproduce!!!

Try using EXTRACT/NOHEADER instead of EXTRACT.

Sigh. The NEWS ADD FILE command is designed to process mail files that have
been extracted WITH the mail headers. NEWS looks for

 <FF>   <FF>   <FF>    <FF>            <FF>
 From:  Path:  NPath:  Relay-Version:  NRelay-Version:

  or

 #!rnews  N#!rnews

to tell where the current article ends and the next article begins. In
addition, it keeps processing headers until a Newsgroup: header is found, eg:

<FF>
From: 	someone
To:	me
CC:
Subj:	something

Received: ...
Received: ...
other mailer headers...

#!rnews <???>
Path: ...
Newsgroups: ...
...

would be treated as ONE set of headers, even though there are actually three
sets of headers there. See the routine add_file in NEWSADD.C, where it does:

    while ( scan_header() );

While it might work to use EXTRACT/NOHEADER is some cases, it is probably not
a good idea in the general case. Again, I would be glad to look at this
problem, but I can't seem to get NEWS to fail adding EXTRACTed files. Could
someone send me a file that causes the problem? Preferable a small one. :-)

Just a quick followup, I am seeing this straight from mail into news, not using
Bob's GATEMAIL program. I will (I hope) be sending Bob some examples of what
mail seems to do on my machine.

Additionaly, many of the files that I am trying to add to NEWS after extracting
from VMS mail have never been news items before, they are straight VMS Mail
notes, often notifications of system events or mail to "POSTMASTER". It is my
impression from reading the NEWS ADD FILE documentation that this is one of the
expected procedures, can anyone verify this?

I have been playing a little bit more on my system and have found that it
appears that VMS Mail headers after the first Form Feed character are lost.
Additional mail headers (such as those created with an MAIL> EXTRACT/ALL) are
seen. If I take and hand manipulate the file to remove the initial Form Feed
character then NEWS properly handles the first mail message, messes up the
second message (the one following the *new* first form feed) and processes the
remaining messages correctly.
