[news.software.anu-news] QUESTIONS ABOUT STARTING UP NEWS

LDG@AMY.SKIDMORE.EDU (Leo Geoffrion, Skidmore College) (09/20/89)

We are trying to get the ANU NEWS started up at our College and are
experiencing some difficulties.

The context:
We have ANU version 5.8, that was FTP'd from KUHUB.CC.UKANS.EDU
We are running VMS 5.1-1, CMU-TCP version 6.4.

We've managed to get the NEWS program running (It's really neat...
my complements to the developers...) and can load in local messages.

Now, we want to hook up to a remote feed from an nearby Unix box that
is running NEWS.

The documentation in FILES.MSS talks about installing TCPSERVER.EXE.
No such file exists in the distribution savesets (src, obj, or dist).
The only other reference comes in the release notes which mentions
this file in conjunction with version 5.2.
Is this an obsolete file that is no longer used, but slipped
    into the documentation anyway?

I tried what seemed obvious, renaming NNTP_TCPCMU.EXE as TCPSERVER.EXE
and setting NEWSSRV in CMU-TCP to point to that executable. But that
port seems to do nothing. Whenever anyone tries to open a connectin
to that TCP port, the system just knocks them back out.

Is there some kind soul out there who can help point us to what we are
doing wrong. I'd sure like to get the connection established, since the
programs looks to be a very valuable enhancement to the communication
services offered to our user community.

Thanks.
