[news.software.anu-news] How to decompress?

TLIMONCE@DRUNIVAC.BITNET (Tom Limoncelli) (09/24/89)

I am using LZDCMP which claims to be Unix compatible. It's not
working on ANU-NEWS-V59.TAR_Z (I renamed it). Can anyone suggest something
better before I go and buy a Unix machine just to do this uncompress ;-)

Unfortunately, it seems that the LZ* utilities for VMS aren't completely Unix
compatible in these respects.

In order to make things easier for some system managers who may not have access
to a Unix machine to run `uncompress' on the tar file (and who may not have
DEC/Shell or VMStar), I'm going to make available on DRYCAS.CLUB.CC.CMU.EDU (in
the ANONYMOUS directory) the file ANU-NEWS-V59.BZK which will be a LZCOMP'ed
backup saveset of the same file.

This will also include the fix for CMU TCP/IP which was in the pub/anu-news
directory on csc2 as well.

There are two different version of LZDCMP.EXE available via anonymous ftp from
kuhub.cc.ukans.edu. The older version, LZDCMP_OLD.EXE will correctly
decompress the ANU-NEWS-V59.TAR_Z file if you use the commands:

$ LZDCMP:==$dev:[dir]LZDCMP_OLD.EXE
$ LZDCMP -B ANU-NEWS-V59.TAR_Z ANU-NEWS-V59.TAR

The ANU-NEWS-V59.TAR file produced should work just fine with TAR2VMS. Note
that the old version of LZDCMP will not work on files created by the new
version of LZDCMP. I keep meaning to debug the new version, but there is
always something more important to do. :-)
