We are in the process of putting Annual News on a MicroVAX II
running VMS Version 5.2 and C version 3.0. We have attempted to
install both versions 5.8 and 5.9 with the same results. The
system comes back with an "Invalid internal file identifier"
Msg upon start up. This error occurs while the program is
executing within the NEWSUTILITY program.
Has anyone else seen this problem? I would appreciate your
help in solving this problem. Is this problem unique to sites
running VMS 5.2?

I am right now in the process of sorting through the source code to see if I can locate the problem, but have not found it as yet. In answer to your question about VMS 5.2, we are running VMS 5.1. The first thing NEWS attempts to do is create two indexed files used to hold information regarding the locally stored items. In order to do this the user running NEWS for the first time on the system needs to ensure: 1) all logical names are correctly set up 2) the logical NEWS_MGR_ID translates to a valid identifier 3) (and this is where you have the problem) the user running NEWS for the FIRST time has been granted the identifier to enable manager access (whatever NEWS_MGR_ID translates to) and also SYSPRV. You should then find that all will be set up correctly. Geoff Huston
