I just started running NEWS (V5.9) on here and I noticed that I was losing a lot (15%-20%) of disk space to unneeded extra blocks due to the disk's cluster size. Fortunately, I remembered about the Virtual Disk driver (written by Glenn Everhart) available which allows system managers to allocate a number of contiguous blocks on a disk and turn that file into a virtual disk with little added overhead. Using this, I took 150000 blocks and made it into a disk with a cluster size of 1. I redefined my NEWS_DEVICE to point to DRYCAS$VDA0: and the system was happy! If anyone would be interested in using VD Driver (no comments, please, about the name :-) ), I can see about packing up the files and making them available for Anonymous FTP or, if I ever get around to setting it up, VMSSERV for Bitnet users. --Marc -- +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Marc Shannon Internet Address (Bitnet name) | | VAX Systems Programmer SYNFUL@DRYCAS.CLUB.CC.CMU.EDU (DRYCAS) | | Carnegie-Mellon University R602MS5U@VB.CC.CMU.EDU (CMCCVB) | | (412) 268-6290 "I mean, really, what could possibly go wrong?" | +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+
