Getting News v5.9 to run with VAX C 2.4
(and you thought it couldn't be done!)
by Tom Limoncelli
Due to political reasons we have VAX C, but no upgrades. (Don't ask
how it happened, a lot of people are upset about it and our new
sysman is gonna change it soon... but in the mean time). So, how does
one re-compile News v5.9? I finally did it.
1-- in [.news_src]sortdef.h needs to be renamed to sordef.h.
2-- file [.news_src]clidef.h is missing, so you have to find it on
the DECUS tape. I have it (from a friend that had the tape, THANKS!)
and I guess I can send it to anyone that requests.
3-- Run NEWSBUILD.COM. I removed one of the comments and inserted a
SET DEF so that I could submit it has a batch file. SUBMIT/NOTIFY is
very useful.
4-- When it errors because it can't find a file, you'll notice that
the line looks like:
#include thing
Change it to:
#include "thing.h"
(i.e. add .h and quotes)
5-- Repeat step three until you are done.
Of course, if you are anal-retentive like me, you'll delete
everything in [.NEWS_BUILD] before you begin all of this, thought
that it really unneeded and wasteful.
Ta da!
