I'm running ANU NEWS 5.7. Things have been going well for quite a few months,
now, but recently two strange things started happening. They appear to me me
to somehow related, and the fact that they both started happening at the same
time leads me to believe that something is confused. I'm looking for guidance
on what it might be.
Strange thing 1:
My first newsgroup is comp.arch. Items in that newsgroup continually appear as
unread, even if I mark them as read using SKIP/NEWSGROUP. The very next time I
fire up NEWS, they are back. I tried deleting my newsrc., but it still happens
with the new one.
Strange thing 2:
comp.arch isn't getting any new news items. I haven't gotten energetic enough
to try and figure out if they are actually coming down the wire or not, but the
new messages are certainly not ending up in news_device:[comp.arch]. Also, the
number of messages in *other* newsgroups is drastically reduced.
I suspect there is a file somewhere that I need to rebuild. Any suggestions?

Any suggestions? yep - news.exe There are a number of problems in 5.7 in this respect. 5.8 fixed a number of these, and a few more areas were cleaned up in 5.9. Geoff Huston
