Dear NetLanders: I have just put up ANU NEWS on our VAX 8650 (VMS 5.1.1, CMU TCP 6.4, NEWS 5.9). I am trying to get NEWS to work with articles that are stored on a remote machine (linked via TCP/IP). I just killed a process that has been creating newsgroups. I got a list of approved newsgroups and ran it through news, creating a COM file. Then I edited the COM file to put /SERVER=xxxx, /PROTOCOL=TCP on every SET NEWSGROUP command. First it creates the newsgroup, then it tells news that the newsgroup is served off of some other node. The trouble is, this process takes a LONG, LONG, LONG time. You can see the "item entry added" messages go by slowly. I have been looking for bottlenecks, but I haven't found any so far. Our CPU is relatively unburdened now (end of the semester, most of the students are gone), little or no page-faults being registered for the process, moderate I/O. The other site (the server) has a busy CPU (lots of batch jobs), but the NNTP server there has a priority of six, so that shouldn't affect it. The job creating newsgroups has been running for hours on end for now. It seems that Ethernet or Internet speeds should be faster than this. What could be causing such SLOW performance? Thanks in advance, Tom Wallis PS> I am sending this via another NEWS machine, using 2400 baud modems, NEWS 5.7, and DECUS UUCP.
