Just a couple short questions . I notice that the control newsgroup has create remove and cancel newsitems. How do you setup anu-news to accept these messages and actually do it? Also how do you use the posting of all valid newsgroups to police the newsgroups? -- **************************************************************************** * Brian Ridout Internet: ridout@ddnvx1.afwl.af.mil * * wl/scev * * Kirtland AFB NM 87117 "Sorry I have nothing funny to say" * ****************************************************************************

Actually, NEWS will always accept and do SOMETHING with any valid control message. If your question is how do you get NEWS to execute these control messages automatically, instead of mailing something to the USENET account, use the /EXECUTE qualifier on the ADD FILE command. I DO NOT RECOMMEND that you use /EXECUTE to process control messages. Frequently, control messages are wrong or not actually intended for your site. Newgroup/rmgroup wars in the alt.* hierarchy can also cause problems for sites that use /EXECUTE. > Also how do you use the posting of all valid newsgroups to police the > newsgroups? I assume you mean the (sort of) monthly postings from Gene Spafford at Purdue and posted in news.admin. These articles contain checkgroup control messages describing all of the "official" newsgroups embedded in them. The checkgroups message for the standard usenet hierarchies (ie, comp,rec,sci,soc...) also contains instructions on how to use them. The instructions are accurate except for the section on how to actually use the checkgroups article. Just follow steps 1 through 4 in the instructions and then use the NEWS command ADD FILE to process the article. This will result in a .COM procedure being mailed to the account USENET to create/delete/modify the newsgroup database. If there is enough interest, I suppose I could post a detailed summary of how to use the monthly postings. -- USmail: Bob Sloane, University of Kansas Computer Center, Lawrence, KS, 66045 E-mail: sloane@kuhub.cc.ukans.edu, sloane@ukanvax.bitnet, AT&T: (913)864-0444
