[news.software.anu-news] Help wanted - News/NNTP/WINTCP-Sun

gerland@ubvms.cc.buffalo.edu (Jim Gerland - Manager, User Support Services) (01/12/90)

I would like some info on how NEWS and NNTP work together.

I have a Sun where my news database lives.

I am running News V5.9A on a VAXcluster under VMS 5.1 and WIN TCP 3.0

Ideally, I would like News to query the Sun for new items hourly so I
have NEWSSKIM.COM submitted every hour. Is this correct?

This results in new news items being listed by News is only keeping 1 day
worth of items listed in the DIRECTORY command. Have I got something set
up wrong?

My Unix colleague is not happy with the amount of network traffic and disk
space being used by his log files due to the enormous amount of XUPDGROUPS
and YCMND commands being generated by News during the NEWSSKIM.

He would like to know if it is safe to #ifndef THISISJUNK / #endif around
the XUPDGROUPS code in NEWSREMCLIENT.C since he reads it as a local command
know only to another ANU-News server.

Also, he wants to know why the YCMND are being used in NEWSREMCLIENT and
NNTP_FEED since that is clearly an illegal command.

If someone who has a similar setup could provide me with some assistance, I
would be very grateful (and so would my colleague). Thanks,
