[news.software.anu-news] Modification suggestion - scan size and directory displays

Leichter-Jerry@CS.YALE.EDU@venus.ycc.yale.edu (01/26/90)

The ability to set the scan size is very handy when logged in over a slow
terminal line. However, the scan size only controls how much you see of a
news item. NEWS also displays other things which can take time to write. In
particular, there are many transitions through a state in which the current
group's directory is displayed. Typing post is one example I just saw a
moment ago!

I suggest that the scan size be applied to directory displays as well. The
meaning here would be different - if the effect were simply to show only the
top few lines, you'd rarely see anything interesting. Rather, the scan size
could set the actual size used for the display. If pressed when such an
abbreviated display was visible, Next Screen would expand the screen.

Even if this is done, I'd further like to suggest that NEWS be a bit more
parsimonious about when it displays directories. Really, why should doing
something like SET LINE lead to a directory display?
