[news.software.anu-news] Problems rebuilding V5.9c for VMS 4.7

kenw@NOAH.ARC.AB.CA (Ken Wallewein CDP) (03/03/90)

  We're still running VMS V4.7. Yes, we'ere going to upgrade, as soon as
we get some software problems out of the way. In the mean time, I'm trying
to upgrade from ANU NEWS V5.8 to V5.9C.

  I think I'm stuck.

  I've managed to acquire all the *def include files, and get all the .C files
to compile - even though there was a warning:

$ cc/nodebug/opt NEWSSITE
        #pragma nostandard
%CC-I-UNRECPRAGMA, Unrecognized pragma;  directive ignored.
                At line number 106 in uaidef.

        #pragma standard
%CC-I-UNRECPRAGMA, Unrecognized pragma;  directive ignored.
                At line number 136 in uaidef.

%CC-I-SUMMARY, Completed with 0 error(s), 0 warning(s), and
                2 informational messages.
                At line number 785 in DUA0:[NEWS_V59C.NEWS_SRC]NEWSSITE.C;1.

  It doesn't look like that's likely to cause problems. However, I have a
more serious problem:

$ link news,news_library/library
%LINK-F-BADIMGHDR, bad image header
        in shareable image file SYS$SYSROOT:[SYSLIB]MAILSHR.EXE;1

  This library does not normally exist on pre-VMS5 sites; it is undoubtedly
in some forumat unknown to VMS V4.7. I have confirmed that the library is
good. If I remove it, the complaint just changes to being unable to find
it.

  It looks like I really have to use VMS V5 callable
mail, and that's not going to work under VMS 4.7. And it doesn't look like
there's any alternative.

  If anyone knows of a site that has managed to get ANU NEWS V5.9C to
compile under VMS V4.7, I'd really know how it was done. Anonymous FTP
or SPAN DECNET access to the executables would be even better :-).

  Thanks,

/kenw
