Really-From: ed@das.llnl.gov (Edward Suranyi) Today a DJ on a local college radio station played a few examples of pairs of songs that were in some way similar to each other. Sometimes they were actual covers, but usually they just sounded similar. One pair he played was Danielle Dax's "Hammerheads" and KT's "The Dreaming." They do have kind of the same rhythm and droning quality. The DJ said KT's song came first, so probably Dax got the idea from her. If anybody else has heard "Hammerheads" I'd like to see your comments. Ed ed@das.llnl.gov

Well, Dax not only got the idea from KT, but she got the rhythm track as well, because "hammerheads" basically uses the rhythm from "The Dreaming" pretty explicitly! It's just sped up, that's all. No problem if you're into cutting tape loops on decent reel to reel decks anyway, which Dax was. Of course, she could've done it they way I did it and just sampled the bugger, but this was back when samplers where much more expensive. If anybody wants any rhythm tracks isolated, looped, sped up, mangled and/or otherwise toyed with, drop me a line and we'll work something out. I recall posting a message to love-hounds eons ago where I told IED that 3 hours of nothing but the opening drum passage from "Sat in Your Lap" would be phenomenally wonderful. Well, I did it, and I let it run for hours while I cleaned the apartment up and boy did my head spin when I shut it off... +---------------------- Is there any ESCAPE from NOISE? --------------------+ | | |\ | jsd@gaffa.mit.edu | "I think quotes are very dangerous | | \|on |/rukman | jsd@umass.bitnet | things." -- Kate Bush | +---------------------------------------------------------------------------+

Really-From: queen@tahoe.unr.edu (Brian Queen) I noticed this many moons ago when I had a stereo and a record colection. I thought one song was a total ripoff of the others idea. I respect both artists but of course Kate won out, regardless of the facts. CONROL/central

In music review, there ARE no "facts" except the "facts" of who played what instrument, and whether the horrible farty noise mixed to the extreme left of the stereo image was placed there on purpose or is in reality just a used birth control device stuck to your turntable. IMPO, (in my pompous opinion), Dax's song has many good things to recommend it, and furthermore, he said, resorting to the old IED cop-out, you can't really compare them cos they're apples and oranges. And don't tell me that having the same rhythm track makes them comparable, because you could then argue that Coldcut is the same as Led Zep cos one ripped off the other's drum track. Anyway, Danielle Dax's song is very exciting for different reasons than Kate's, so git outta heeeyah!
