Again I'd like to thank all the people who responded with helpful suggestions. It turned out the problem was that there is another screw on top of the Interlan tap which controls the height of the probe. The instructions carefully avoided mentioning this, so we assumed it was factory set (although it was loose enough to turn by hand.) While the directions didn't say so, you have to tighten this screw down to get the probe to make contact with the cable core. Mark
