Really-From: tamar@attunix.att.com Tom's Diner is located on Broadway and about 112th st in NYC. (This is the west, not the east, side.) It's a favorite local greasy spoon for Columbia students. Suzanne Vega attended Barnard so it's likely that she, like the rest of us, had her share of egg creams and coffee there in the wee hours. Actually her college experience seems to be important to her. She did a benefit for Barnard last year along with fellow alums Laurie Anderson and Joan Rivers which was excellent. I also saw her several years ago perform for a small crowd at the student center. And, I hear she is writing a play that is an adaptation of her senior thesis on Carson McCullers. Tamar

Let me guess: You were at Barnard? Or Columbia, on the main campus? Let's not forget that Art Garfunkel (a John Jay Scholar at Columbia College) spent many evenings at Tom's when his friend from Queens College, Paul Simon, came up to visit and they'd work on songs and generally shoot the breeze. Jack Kerouac spent a lot of chow time at Tom's before the bar at the (late, lamented) West End opened. That booth in the middle is now occupied by a future Canadian Senator from Western Canada...
