Except in the deep dark corners of max-cable-length and max-stations, where the version 1.0 stuff wouldn't have worked anyway, rev 1.0 and 2.0 are fully compatible ON THE CABLE (**), and indeed are compatible with IEEE 802.3, when that is configured with the set of options which effectively selects "Ethernet" (subject to the "length" vs. "type" field discussed previously). (**) Because of the collision-check feature of 2.0, you may have trouble getting 1.0 controllers to work with 2.0 transceivers, and vice-versa, but manufacturers of both will gladly tell you which they are, and many OEMs make both (pick your part number). (Some are even switch selectable!) Just ask your controller vendor which version is supplied, and buy transceivers to match.
