[rec.music.gaffa] A few initial TSW comments after a week

I've listened to it at least twice a day since I bought it. Sometimes
closer to 7 or 8. I've tried to see the genius in it, but alas, I think this
is truly a step down from HOL, and definitely a step down from TD. Don't
crucify me on this. I still love the album. I just feel that she let me
down.
I wasn't expecting the ethereal. So maybe it's just shock. I'll just
quickly step through the tracks, and leave it until I finish my analysis.

The Sensual World - A great opener.
Love and Anger - "Big Sky" take two. I didn't think BS was terribly
wonderful, and wouldn't have asked for another.
The Fog - Hard to say. Occasionally I've found it intense, but normally I
find it quite boring. Haven't determined why yet.
Reaching Out - Does the synth line in this remind anyone else of Quadrophenia?
I think the vocals on this track are incredible.
Heads We're Dancing - I really like this one. I shouldn't (it's too poppy for
my tastes), but I do. Catchy I guess is the best word. What feeling!!
Deeper Understanding - Black box...does Kate have a NeXT? Gee, this one sort
of hits home for some reason :-)
Between a Man and a Woman - I am captivated by the delivery of the opening
lyrics, which she promptly drops, never to be heard again...this
disappointed me. I don't like the rest of the song as much.
Never Be Mine - Interesting perspective.
Rocket's Tail - I'll jump on the bandwagon and brand this the best song on the
    album. Textures, vocals, Gilmour...all perfect.
This Woman's Work - I'm glad she put this on the album. Definitely a plus.
Walk Straight Down the Middle - eh. Doesn't do much for me.

I'm sure you're all terribly happy I bothered to post that. Oh, a
couple other things. I've been trying to push these idiots around here into
displaying the album a little more prominently. I've been somewhat
successful. Even talked one of the sales people into buying it. And WHFS has
been playing tracks from the album pretty routinely. Nobody else around here
would play Kate, so I haven't been listening for it. Hopefully I'll have a
more in depth review in a few days. Until then...

I feel I must agree with you on this point, I've had the album
for a week now, and I've been listening to it almost constantly.
I don't think that TSW comes anywhere near to The Dreaming or
HOL when it comes to conveying the feeling in the songs...
There are no songs on TSW that give me goosebumps like
"Cloudbusting" or "Night of The Swallow" for instance.

Of course, there are some great songs TSW as well, "Heads We're
Dancing" and "Never be Mine" for instance, but I think TSW isn't
nowhere near the class of TD or HOL.

Really? I shiver ever time I listen to the album. Even after I had
owned the promocassette for a month and had worn the tape out, I
shivered when I bought the CD one day late and played it at loud
volumes in a dark room. "The Fog", "Never Be Mine", "Rocket's
Tail" and "Deeper Understanding" all scare the skin right off of
my body, they're so eerie and powerful...

Will people stop comparing TSW to HoL or TD!?!?!?!? It's a completely
different album and should not be "measured" against other works,
either KT's or other artists. Look at it for what it is and if then
it doesn't do anything for you, you can flame it, but don't say
that isn't worth it just because it isn't on the level of earlier
works.

Sorry for picking on you directly Patrik, you have not been the
only offender; however, you said what others are saying most suc-
cintly and I could not contain myself.

Why not compare albums then? I agree with you that TSW has nothing
whatsoever to do with HOL or TD, but I can't see anything wrong
with comparing them. I also agree with whoever it was that said
(I think it was Ed.) that making a poll about Kate-records really
isn't worth much, but why not? I believe most people like charts,
otherwise there wouldn't be any reason for having them around, would
there?

I agree. After owning this thing on CD for not even a week now, I get
the shivers on a lot of it! Or is it the lack of heat in my building?
Nah. It's Good! I regret filling out the survey & tend to agree with Ed.
Whatever album I'm listening to is best at that moment. It's a little
trite to just "rank" it all. Remember the scene in _Dead Poet's Society_?

I'm somewhat disappointed by TSW, but not nearly as much as I was when
I first got it. I think that in some ways it is much harder to listen
to than HOL, for example. However, I notice new things each time I
listen to it (for example the very strange things KT does with her
voice in Rocket's Tail). While I don't think I will ever like it as
much as The Dreaming, HOL or Lionheart, I think it is probably the
best rock album I've bought this year. In some ways this is a very
frustrating album to listen to because of the way in which the songs
tend not to blend into each other. I'm not sure this is easy to
explain, but The Dreaming is a great album without having any of the 5
best KT songs (IMHO) (similarly with Dark Side of the Moon). I like a
number of the songs on TSW, but there are too many places where it
grabs me and then lets me down (i.e. tsw -> love and anger, the fog ->
reaching out, heads we're dancing -> deeper understanding). In all of
these cases, I like the first song and feel neutral at best about the
second. *sigh* too bad, I was hoping it would top The Dreaming, but
that may be impossible even for Kate Bush.
