[rec.music.gaffa] Bootleg advice needed...

abj@IDA.LiU.SE (Andreas Bjorklind) (11/17/89)

I have a decision problem: in my local used records shop I can buy
a KaTe-bootleg. This is not the problem... that I'm a complete novice
to bootlegs is, though!
The bootleg is Rock Solid Records (?) double LP "Kate Bush
Live in Bristol 1979" (with a beautiful figure-cut sleeve). The record-
man wants $31.00 for it.
My question: is this a fair price for this bootleg?

Looking forward to YOUR advice!

I need advice on buying (or not buying) a KaTe bootleg I found in
the local used records shop. The bootleg is Rock Stolid Records (?)
"Kate Bush Live in Bristol 1979", with a very beautiful figure-cut
sleeve (and in a very good condition). The owner wants $31.00
(thirtyone) for it.
My question: is it a good price, or is it a way to ruin love-
hounds?

Advice, anyone...?

IMHO the one and only "fair" price for a bootleg recording ( or book,
etc. ) is $0.00; in other words *DON'T BUY IT*. Think for a moment.
Do you really like Kate ? Do you really admire her talent ? Do her
songs speak to something inside you ? Then why do you want to cheat
her ?

I have heard all of the rationalizations for bootlegs; "most of the
money for legitimate copies goes to middlemen", "the ones really
getting rich are the record company ( publisher ) execs and owners",
and so on. Well, when you buy a bootleg copy, the "suits" don't get
their pound of flesh ( unless they are also getting a
piece-of-the-action from the bootleggers ), but the artist also gets
NOTHING.

I realize that most people's funds for records are limited and CDs are
grossly over-priced, but that is no excuse. Artists in all media are
cheated enough by the "system", lets not make it worse by buying
bootleg copies of works by artist whom we claim to admire.

I will not go into the ethics and legality of bootlegs. That has been debated
far and wide... even onto this list/newsgroup. All things considered, yes
it's a fair price. Here's what you should consider. Bootlegs typically run
about $10-15 per disc, "new." If what you're looking at is used, it may be
condsiderably less than a bargain. Bootlegs are typically pressed on 3rd
rate vinyl, so they tend to wear quickly... add that to the generally abysmal
signal quality and you end up with something unlistenable, regardless of your
dediKaTion. One other factor here is one unknown to me. I don't know how
available this particular record is. After a pressing of bootlegs is sold,
if there is demand, the price for them can inflate. Typically, (if the
bootlegger is still around) subsequent pressings will be made, usually from
the same presses, which ensures further degredation of quality.

Whether the price is "fair" is up to you or the eventual buyer. It *is*,
however, *about* what other collectors have paid for it, and is the price of
a commodity that's rather difficult to shop around for.

I've only bought one bootleg; it was the one with Kate in Japanese-like armour
on the front, and a willowy white dress on the back; a two-record set. The
cost was something like $30.

Now, the bad part: It was unlistenable. I was all excited (the album had, I
believe, one or two songs I hadn't heard) about it, but the sound quality was
MISERABLE. My friend and I listened to it for about 30 minutes, and then,
after one song (I forget which) was over, he put in the official CD version of
the same song. The difference was amazing.

So, my conclusions: Bootleg albums aren't worth it; if you're a completist
Kate fan, there are so many of them that you'll never get them all, (I bet IED
doesn't have EVERY one, though perhaps he has many), and if you're not, then
why bother?

The exception to this, of course, is ObsKuriTies II, which can be found quite
cheaply and is one of the few bootlegs with mostly never-before-heard songs.
But this is the exception that proves the rule.

You like Kate Bush? You exceedingly enjoy her albums?
You a collector? You will probably never see it again.
Don't look at the price ... just let the money slip away.
Don't think about it and just get it.
You'll most likely be glad that you did.
