[net.lan] How to join ether cables?

romig@osu-dbs.UUCP (Steve ) (06/26/84)

Howdy. We have three chunks of ethernet cable here that we need to connect
together to make one ethernet. The reason that there is three chunks is that
the guy who installed the cable *cut it off* because that was all he needed
at the time to stretch from one building to another. There was barely enough
room in this building to add one tap, and so we have 4 Xerox Dandylions on
their own chunk of cable. In the other building, the cable that is there is
not long enough to reach to the room that is going to become our machine
room for our 780. So we have another chunk of cable to attach at that end,
since we want all of our machines to be able to communicate nicely.

I was (am) pretty sure that ethernet cables can be joined, but what I don't
know is how, and what sorts of problems can crop up when you join cables.
Could someone tell me about ethernet cables, and how to join them? Is this
what repeaters are used for? If not, I would also appreciate finding out
about repeaters also.

The cables from Interlan had N connectors on the end of it and they give
you barrels (double females) to hook them together.
