[rec.music.gaffa] Another Recommendation

jsd@GAFFA.MIT.EDU (Jon Drukman) (12/29/89)

I've had this for a while now, but I haven't mentioned it in this forum.

Those interested in Kate and Cocteau Twins and Propaganda and other
synth heavy/female vocal combinations may be interested in a British
duo known as Beautiful Pea Green Boat. They have a few albums and now
a CD available domestically in America on C'est La Mort records.
(It's called "Still Life").

Heather Wright (the singer) has a very good voice, and she uses it to
wonderful effect. Ian Williams (the musician) is into heavy synth
arrangements which sometimes have classical stylings. The drums go
BOOM a lot (although there are some quieter numbers with more subtle
usage). I think this group will appeal to members of this mailing
list. Check them out if you're in an adventurous mood.

I must second Jon's recommendation concerning Beautiful Pea Green Boat. I
picked up the CD just recently and enjoyed it immensely.

And again, I must also bring up the band Area, who do have a first album
(thank you Vickie for pointing that out to me!) called _The_Perfect_Dream_.
Their latest is _between_purple_and_pink_. They are also on C'est la Mort
Records (as is BPGB) and shouldn't be too hard to find.

For you industrials out there, C'est la Mort also just released the Doc-
tor Death's Volume 3 collection featuring Frontline Assembly and others.
Controlled Breathing's latest is also a recent release from the same label.

Look into these!

Thanks for the note, Jon. Especially since I'm an avid Cocteau
Twins fan. I even bought Ian McCullock's latest solo album
(singer for Echo and the Bunneymen) just because Elizabeth
Fraser sings with him on one of the songs ("Candleland").

Speaking of other female vocalists, I heard a very pretty
Sinead O'Conner song on KITS last nite. It wasn't on her album
(Lion and Cobra), nor was it "Still Listening" or "Jump in
the River". It was _something different_, and Very
nice. I think the d.j. said it was from a movie, but I can't
remember the movie's name. Perhaps a one-word title, beginning
with a "C"???

Any leads on this one greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

P.S. You have to be nice to me because I turn 30 this week.

The song you heard was probably "Heroine", which was indeed from a
movie soundtrack, though I forget which one. I've only seen this on
a hard-to-find twelve inch single. She plays with The Edge of U2.
In fact, I believe it was The Edge who discovered her, in a somewhat
similar way to that in which Dave Gilmour discovered Kate.
