I work in a very large building where there will shortly be lots of work
stations etc etc. The 1500 meter total length of Ethernet cable will
be far to small. We anticipate connecting many different kind of machines
to a LAN. Some of these machines will be incompatible (ie wont be able to
talk to each other). However it would be nice to connect them all to the same
net so that someday we could get (or hack together software) to put them on
speaking terms.
What I need to connect seperate nets together are a few very low level
gateways that simply pass on messages which need to go to other nets. Do
such beasts exist? If not are there any fundemental problems in making one?
