[rec.music.gaffa] Record Shopping in London

To all followers of kate, I would like to relate to you an unfortunate
experience I had on my kateness quest during a recent trip to London.
While browsing through the local record shops, I happened upon a CD
of two interviews with Ms. Bush and a videotape which I purchased and
brought back to the states with me. Well, the video was completely
scrambled by Gatway's new security system which was not too upsetting since
the tape is readily available in New York (and elsewhere), however, I was
astonished to find that the interview recorded on the CD was transcribed
to disc at too fast a speed. The first interview sounds rather like one
with Alvin the Chipmunk than with adorable Kate. At least the second interview
(which I had on a picturedisc record) was transcribed at the right speed!

God speed, and kateness forever (and hi Bernie!).

Are you sure it was a security system that scrambled your video? The UK
uses a different broadcast format, and you cannot use their tapes
here and vice versa. It is possible to get them converted, but it is
expensive and a nuisance.

Is it possible the CD was defective? I'd try writing to the label
or manufacturer to see...if you bought it at one of the big west end
record shops (HMV, Virgin, Tower), you could probably send it back.

Your videotape purchased in London looks scrambled because the UK uses a
different video format than the US. Theirs is called PAL, ours is called
NTSC. Look in the phone book under Video for firms that do conversions
(or get an Indian newspaper at an Indian grocery and look for ads for
conversions).
The above does not contradict the fact that the airport security machines can
ruin magnetic tapes as well as film (no matter what propaganda they tell you).
In fact, sometimes just the conveyer belt motors can affect magnetic tapes!

Um, not that I want to be too critical here, but when you say
that the security systems scrambled the video-tape that you bought
in London, did you take into account the difference between PAL
(the video encoding system used in the UK) and NTSC (the one
used in the US) ? The physical tapes look identical, but the
data on them is written in completely different formats, which
would probably make it look "scrambled" if you played a PAL tape
on an NTSC machine.

Guys, don't do stupid things like this. Never ever ever buy a
video tape in a foreign country, except for Canada, Mexico, and
Japan, unless you have one of those ridiculously expensive VCRs
that play in multiple formats.

Can't help you with the CD problem, though. Not my specialty.

Yes. I had the traumatic experience of an audio-less copy of The Hair
of the Hound video, which I bought at Tower Records, Piccadilly Circus. I
just sent the video to their mail order dept., and got a new copy back
(and of course a letter explaining how sorry they were).

So sent those CDs back!
